An incredible performance by Joaquin Pheonix who expertly brings to life a character that was very difficult to like yet is compelling to watch.
The story nicely flows through the key events in the Joker"s life that drive his insanity and make him question his place in a dystopian world. We feel pity for him, we feel the injustice and we squirm knowing there will be a consequence to his anger.
While the film neatly introduces the threads to the Batman story it can also stand alone as a story of human suffering. It"s a tough story but the characters and narrative make it very enjoyable film to watch. It is the anti-superhero film without gadgets and without gimmicks.
It"s one of the best movies of 2019. Joaquin Phoenix is a shoe in for best actor at the Oscars. The movie is dark. this is true, but it takes you into the life of the Joker. This isn"t your action flick as in most Batman movies. This is a window for looking in on how the Joker comes to life. As I already wrote the acting is superb.

A combination of true cinema and this current trend of superheroes manages to create the best film of the year. Joker batman. 1:16 - 1:32, I noticed how when Randall made a condescending joke about the midget"s(Gary"s) height to put Gary down and make Gary feel bad/stupid, and expected Joker to laugh along with him, the Joker didn"t. There was this awkward pause and then the Joker let out this laugh that just said Fuck you Randall. Because unlike Randall, the Joker understood exactly what it was like to be the one being laughed at and made to feel lesser than. People like Randall in the real world put people down to feel better about themselves, and that"s honestly so disgusting. There are way too many Randall"s in the world. I"m not saying the Joker should have killed him, that was awful making an observation.

This is so interesting! But even rewatching that it pains me so much to see such inequality and harm being done to someone who already has a broken soul. It shakes me to my core and almost makes me cry and the whole entire time I was watching the movie, I just felt like I wanted to help him so he can feel better and not be mistreated so badly by society and pretty much everyone around him. This is why this movie is so unsettling in a way because everyone"s sense of justice kicks in but when you think it can"t get worse for Arthur he finds out his adoptive mother abused him and I think that"s where it"s the end of Arthur and beginning of Joker. Because finding out his mum, the person that he probably loves most, isn"t his real mum and then abused him on top of that, that ultimately broke him, understandably. So, I completely understand why he turns out the way he is with becoming Joker but then unsettling for the viewer again is that he starts to kill people, which is highly unsettling because it is morally wrong. And I think this is the reason why this movie stays in our minds for so long because we"re trying to balance the injustice done to him and his ultimate reaction to it.
